Memories, Mom and Spring

Hello and Happy Mother's Day! We are finally having spring weather in Wester New York. And though my mom has been gone for 6 years I made this card with her in mind. She loved dogwood trees. Now while we are near lakes, I grew up in Cherry Creek which is in a valley. The spring changes (warm weather and flowering trees) can be two weeks later than they are near Lake Erie only 15 miles away. So while the dogwoods bloom near the lake, it is a little more difficult away from the lake where we lived. But there was one in our backyard by the hen house. My mom loved that tree! I don't remember if my dad gave it to her or one of my older brothers and sisters but it was always beautiful in the spring! While it was more of the pink variety I decide to stick with the white ones for my card. Do you know the legend of the dogwood?
It is said to be the tree that the cross was made from. After the Crucifixion the tree never grew big and strong again and the flowers represent the cross, the brownish color represents the blood from Jesus' hands and feet. Notice that the ends of the flower petals have a 'hole'. Here is a link to the legend better than I can say it. The Legend of the Dogwood tree.
I know that my mother was aware of this symbolism but I never asked if that's why she loved the dogwood so much.

Thanks for coming by today and for putting up with my rambling. I miss my mom so much. She was an amazing person.

I hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Cheryl

Cheryl,Happy mother's day to you.
Your story touched my heart, as much as your card. I love the colors, and how you showcased this wonderful branch of dogwood. I had to find the french translation, cause I thought they were apple tree flowers. Thank you for sharing with us the story and your beautiful work.
Hugs.

Hi Cheryl,
Your card is very beautiful.
I love that you made it in memory of your mother.
I live in British Columbia Canada. The Dogwood is the tree for our Province. It is illegal to cut one down.
I also love them and miss the two pink ones I had where we used to live so very much.
I am also aware of the connotation of them.
Lovely of you to include that with your card today :o)
Hugs, Candy

very pretty, Cheryl! I love the pink dogwoods and planted one a few years ago. I am soooo sad this spring to see that my tree has died.
I hope you had a lovely Mother's Day.
